Assistant Professor, History or Philosophy of Education
The School of Education and Social Policy (SESP) at Northwestern is seeking an assistant professor of education, with an emphasis on either the history or philosophy of education. SESP is an interdisciplinary school focused on understanding teaching, learning, human development, and policy across the lifespan and at different scales. Applicants with degrees in education, history, or philosophy are most desired. Potential areas of research interest include the history of educational policy or educational policy movements, the intersections between historical movements and current educational policies, the ways that ideologies drive school decision making or legislative actions, the future of civics education, the intersections of the humanities and social, political, or economic policy, the intersections of law, policy, and ideologies or histories, the history or philosophy of technology in education, or the history of education as it relates to broader equity movements. It is important to see implications in research trajectories that focus on the intersections between policy and practice. Candidates must have the capacity to teach both undergraduate and graduate students in broad survey courses of either history or philosophy of education, teach a methods course related to either history or philosophy, and be an engaged partner for faculty across Northwestern or with local school districts. Having an explicit connection to the role of civics and education is desirable. Applicants should submit via the online system, a letter outlining their research program and teaching experience, a current CV, representative papers, and three contacts for letters of reference. Letters can be addressed to James Spillane, Search Committee Chair. Review of materials will begin on December 1, 2024. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their materials before that date.
